The town’s history began in 1872, when the Town of Herman’s residents were granted wilderness parcels after living on it and improving it. Soon the landscape was dotted with buildings that included a one room schoolhouse, sawmills, an ice-cutting company, and dairies. A forest fire in 1918 set the growth of the town back considerably, but with the help of the Red Cross, was quickly rebuilt. The town experienced some growth during the Great Depression, as the federal government granted poverty-stricken city dwellers about 85 homesteads in the Town of Herman, along with a new house and some livestock, all at a very low price. When the Town of Herman was threatened by annexation from Duluth in 1974, the residents organized grass-roots opposition, and in 1975, the Town of Herman became the City of Hermantown.
